Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. Have visited multiple time in
the last ten years. Friendly, clean village (actually two villages) in the
German Alps. Lots of wonderful food, hotels, wandering (walking).
Beautiful scenary and friendly people. I go back at least once a year.
While there can take day trips in Munich, Austria or Italy.
There: Fly into Munich. Take Lufthansa bus to the Bahnhof and then
the train to Garmisch. Once registered at your hotel in Garmisch, you get a
Kur card which entitles you to free transportation on the city bus.
I have stayed in a top class hotel (Post Hotel -
Partenkirchen all the way down to Fraunerdorfers (inexpensive) and many
inbetween. All hotels are clean. Breakfast included in rates.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Food is great anywhere. Breakfast
is included in hotel rates. Service is wonderful but don;t expect to be
rushed like you are in the United States. I have eaten breakfast at a hotel
that I didn't stay in. I was still there at lunch and never a word was
said.
Top of the Zugspitz, either by train or cable car. Lots of
wandering (walking) in the mountains. Their wanderkarte (map of hiking
trails) are wonderful. Never got lost. Even give you the countour lines so
you know how steep the trails are. Go through the Partnachklamm (a gorge
with the trail "cut" into the rock).
