Europe: Slovenia
I just returned from a fabulous trip to Slovenia. When I tell people in the US where I was they need a geography lesson to get their bearings. This is a small country bordering Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia. It is a beautiful and safe destination for the traveler who wishes to see a lot in a short time. Slovenia has everything. It has high mountains (the Alps), rolling hills, peaceful farmlands, urban cultural centers, coastal resorts (on the Adriatic). I saw Roman ruins, art museums, mercury mines, monasteries, and castles. The people are bilingual. We found English spoken everywhere. It was so clean and pretty in all the areas we spent time in. The food was very good and we visited some outstanding restaurants. As you can tell I was impressed.
We flew to Frankfurt Germany and then flew into Ljubljana (the capital) We travelled in a tour using busses, and then hired a van for part of our stay.
We stayed in some outstanding hotels. I would recommend Hotel Lev in Ljubljana and in Portorose, Hotel Bernadin .We enjoyed those hotels the most.
We were served some fabulous meals. The tour allowed us to taste regional specialties. You must try potica, apple strudel. The wines were very nice. The main dishes were mainly veal, chicken and pork.
The country is only the size of Massachusetts so you can travel from one end to the other quite easily. I was impressed by Ljubljana. It was a beautiful old city with a modern feel. We were able to walk from our hotel to all the major areas of interest. It had a real alive feel in the streets. The other place that I would return tomorrow to is Portaroz. It was beautiful. The hotel we stayed at had a private beach and the weather was perfect
We visited Terme Catez. It is a thermal spa resort. It had many recreational choices.
We did not look into this during this trip . But did see families in all the areas we visited.
